Although we’re always happy to assist our Stamford-area neighbors, there’s really no reason to schedule service if you just want to check your tire tread wear. In fact, any driver wondering how to check tire tread depth can easily learn to perform this More Service Tips task in five minutes or less. What’s more, you won’t even need any specialized equipment–a penny will do just fine.

Know When It’s Time to Trade Up

Unless you’ve purchased specialized off-roading tires, winter tires, or another high-performance substitute, your tire tread depth should start at roughly 10/32 or 11/32 of an inch. Most models on our lot will come equipped with all-season tires, but you can always ask a specialist if you’re unsure.

If your tire tread depth reaches 1/16 of an inch or less, it’s time to schedule service and pick up a new set from your local tire store near Norwalk or Wilton. With proper maintenance, most tires will last for around 50,000 miles.

How to Check Tire Tread Depth with a Penny

For most drivers, the answer to the question, “How do I check tire tread wear at home?” is simply, “With a penny!” Although there’s nothing wrong with trying to fit a ruler into your wheel well or picking up a tire tread gauge at our parts department, the driver who only needs to know if they’re good to go will find it easier to use a penny:

  1. Take a penny and insert it into the tire tread. Make sure that Lincoln’s head is facing down and out.
  2. Check to see how much of Lincoln’s face is visible. If you can see all of it, your tires are below the 2/32 replacement marker.
  3. Check each tire, and check each tire at multiple locations. Massive variations can indicate a deeper issue.

Know the Signs of Deteriorating Tires

Even if your treads are still deep enough to provide adequate traction, there are other signs that can limit your performance and increase your risk of a flat or a blowout. Here’s what to watch out for:

  • If you don’t have a tire pressure gauge on your dashboard, it’s a good idea to check your tire pressure when you’re looking at the tread.
  • Observe the tire wall and check for visible damage, including cracking, bubbling, and tire rot.
  • It isn’t always easy to notice misalignment just by looking at your tires. However, if something appears out of line, it probably is!
