How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires?

how-to-rotate-your-tires

Do you know when to rotate your tires or how many miles to rotate tires? Maybe you don’t even know what a tire rotation is. Land Rover Darien is here to help. Generally speaking, you’ll want to schedule tire rotation every 5,000 miles or so.

Whether you want to rotate your tires yourself or prefer to have our service center do it, Land Rover Darien is at your service. If you need new tires, tire rotation, or even wheel alignment around Stamford, contact our service center. You can even make an appointment online.

When to Rotate Tires

So, how often should you rotate your tires? Front and rear-wheel drive vehicles should have their tires rotated approximately every 5,000 to 7,500 miles, while all-wheel-drive vehicles need their tires rotated about every 3,000-5,000 miles. AWD vehicles need their tires rotated more often because all four tires are actively engaged simultaneously, which causes them to wear out faster.

Of course, Land Rover Darien recommends that you check your owner’s manual for specific recommendations for your particular Land Rover model. All of our new vehicles include all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive as standard, and frequent off-roading or towing may warrant more frequent rotation.

Why Should You Rotate Your Tires?

Tires normally wear out unevenly. Usually, your front tires’ outside edges will reveal more significant wear, while the rear wheels wear out more evenly. That’s why if you don’t regularly rotate your tires, they will wear at different rates, and you’ll have no choice but to buy new tires sooner. Rotating your tires when you’re supposed to will save you money and help keep you safer when driving on Norwalk streets.

Proper Tire Positions

  • FWD Tires: When working with FWD vehicles, move the front tires to the back of the car in the same left/right positions. But, when moving the rear tires up to the front, switch the right and left tires.
  • RWD Tires: When working with RWD tires, do the opposite as above. The rear tires should be moved forward on the vehicle in the same left and right positions. When you move the front tires to the rear, make sure you switch the left and right tire positions.
  • AWD Tires: Most AWD and 4WD vehicles use an “X-shaped” tire rotation pattern. Since AWD systems are all more or less unique, you’ll want to check your owner’s manual for details.

How to Do a Tire Rotation

If you want to rotate tires yourself, you’ll need a car jack, a set of jack stands, and a lug nut wrench. Once you have all the tools you need, follow these steps:

  1. Park on level ground, and let your parking brake as an extra safety step.
  2. Loosen all of the lug nuts on all four wheels but don’t take them off of your Land Rover yet.
  3. Using the car jack, lift one wheel and place the jack stand underneath it.
  4. Remove all of the tires on your vehicle and fill them to the recommended tire pressure (written outside the tire, or in your owner’s manual). Once correctly filled, rotate your tires according to the directions above for your type of tires. Then, screw on the lug nuts by hand as much as you can.
  5. Lastly, lower your vehicle from the jack stand and use the lug wrench to carefully tighten and secure all of the lug nuts on each tire. It’s best to work the lug nuts diagonally from one to another in a star-like pattern.

You’ve mastered tire rotations. Now it’s time to find out how long car brakes last!
